Furcation tubing, also known as jacketing, is used to protect delicate fibers from damage. Fiber optic patch cable types are typically represented by the color of the tubing.

Yellow tubing is the industry standard for single mode fiber, orange designates multimode fiber, and blue is typically reserved for polarization-maintaining fiber. The black tube prevents visible light from interfering with the transmission of the optical signal.
